Chainguard Container for yopass

Minimal docker image for Yopass. Secure sharing of secrets, passwords and files

Chainguard Containers are regularly-updated, secure-by-default container images.

Download this Container Image

For those with access, this container image is available on cgr.dev:

docker pull cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/yopass:latest

Be sure to replace the ORGANIZATION placeholder with the name used for your organization's private repository within the Chainguard Registry.

Compatibility Notes

This image is a drop-in replacement for the upstream jhaals/yopass image:

  • The entrypoint is /yopass-server, matching upstream. The upstream paths /yopass, /yopass-server and /public are provided as symlinks to the packaged binaries and assets under /usr/bin and /usr/share/yopass.
  • The container runs as the yopass user (uid/gid 1000), matching upstream's USER 1000. Unlike upstream, the user is a named account (yopass) rather than a bare numeric uid; the uid is identical, so volume ownership and securityContext behaviour are unchanged.
  • The yopass CLI client is included at /usr/bin/yopass.
  • The server stores only ciphertext and requires an external backend: memcached (the default, expected at localhost:11211) or a redis-compatible server. In Kubernetes, running memcached as a sidecar container satisfies the default with no flags.

Getting Started

Using Docker with a memcached backend

docker network create yopass
docker run -d --name memcached --network yopass cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/memcached:latest
docker run -d --name yopass --network yopass -p 1337:1337 \
  cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/yopass:latest --memcached memcached:11211

The web UI is then available at http://localhost:1337/. Secrets are encrypted in the browser before upload.

Using a redis-compatible backend

docker run -d --name valkey --network yopass cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/valkey:latest
docker run -d --name yopass-redis --network yopass -p 1337:1337 \
  cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/yopass:latest \
  --database redis --redis redis://valkey:6379/0

Sharing a secret with the CLI

echo "a secret" | docker run -i --rm --network yopass --entrypoint /usr/bin/yopass \
  cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/yopass:latest \
  --api http://yopass:1337 --url http://localhost:1337 --expiration 1h

The printed URL can be opened in a browser or passed back to the CLI with --decrypt to retrieve the secret.

What are Chainguard Containers?

Chainguard's free tier of Starter container images are built with Wolfi, our minimal Linux undistro.

All other Chainguard Containers are built with Chainguard OS, Chainguard's minimal Linux operating system designed to produce container images that meet the requirements of a more secure software supply chain.

The main features of Chainguard Containers include:

For cases where you need container images with shells and package managers to build or debug, most Chainguard Containers come paired with a development, or -dev, variant.

In all other cases, including Chainguard Containers tagged as :latest or with a specific version number, the container images include only an open-source application and its runtime dependencies. These minimal container images typically do not contain a shell or package manager.

Although the -dev container image variants have similar security features as their more minimal versions, they include additional software that is typically not necessary in production environments. We recommend using multi-stage builds to copy artifacts from the -dev variant into a more minimal production image.

Need additional packages?

To improve security, Chainguard Containers include only essential dependencies. Need more packages? Chainguard customers can use Custom Assembly to add packages, either through the Console, chainctl, or API.

To use Custom Assembly in the Chainguard Console: navigate to the image you'd like to customize in your Organization's list of images, and click on the Customize image button at the top of the page.
