Chainguard Container for prom-label-proxy-fips

FIPS-enabled minimalist image for prom-label-proxy, which enforces a tenant label in PromQL queries so callers of a shared Prometheus, Thanos, or Alertmanager only see their own data

Compatibility Notes

Chainguard's prom-label-proxy-fips image is the FIPS variant of prom-label-proxy and is comparable to the upstream prom-label-proxy image. The command-line interface, listening behavior, and label enforcement are identical to the non-FIPS image, so the two are interchangeable from a configuration standpoint.

It runs as UID 65534 (nobody) and uses the same entrypoint path, /bin/prom-label-proxy, as the upstream image. The one difference to be aware of is that this image does not include a shell or package manager.

FIPS support

This image performs its cryptography through the FIPS 140-3 validated OpenSSL provider, which the binary loads at runtime. The image ships the hardened OpenSSL configuration that provider requires, so no additional setup is needed.

Prerequisites

The proxy does not store data of its own; it needs an upstream to forward to. That upstream is a Prometheus, Thanos, or Alertmanager API, and the series it serves must carry the label you intend to enforce. Refer to the upstream documentation for the endpoints supported against each upstream.

Getting Started

The proxy requires two flags: --upstream, the API it forwards to, and --label, the label it enforces on every query. Start by confirming the image runs and listing the available flags:

To see it enforce a label, run it in front of a Prometheus instance on a shared Docker network:

A query must now name the tenant it is asking about, and one that names no tenant is rejected rather than forwarded:

Configuration

The tenant value can come from one of three mutually exclusive sources: a query parameter (--query-param, the default, named after --label), an HTTP header (--header-name), or a fixed value baked into the process (--label-value). Header-based extraction is usually the right choice in front of an authenticating proxy, because the tenant is then set by infrastructure the caller cannot influence.

--error-on-replace is the flag that matters most for isolation. Without it, a query that already contains a matcher for the enforced label has that matcher rewritten; with it, the request is rejected instead, so a caller cannot probe another tenant and receive silently altered results.

When the upstream is reached over TLS, supply the trust anchor with --upstream-ca-cert, and add --upstream-client-cert and --upstream-client-key if the upstream requires mutual TLS. Those handshakes are performed by the validated OpenSSL provider in this variant.

To deploy with the upstream Helm chart, point it at this image with a values file:

What are Chainguard Containers?

Chainguard's free tier of Starter container images are built with Wolfi, our minimal Linux undistro.

All other Chainguard Containers are built with Chainguard OS, Chainguard's minimal Linux operating system designed to produce container images that meet the requirements of a more secure software supply chain.

The main features of Chainguard Containers include:

For cases where you need container images with shells and package managers to build or debug, most Chainguard Containers come paired with a development, or -dev, variant.

In all other cases, including Chainguard Containers tagged as :latest or with a specific version number, the container images include only an open-source application and its runtime dependencies. These minimal container images typically do not contain a shell or package manager.

Although the -dev container image variants have similar security features as their more minimal versions, they include additional software that is typically not necessary in production environments. We recommend using multi-stage builds to copy artifacts from the -dev variant into a more minimal production image.

Need additional packages?

To improve security, Chainguard Containers include only essential dependencies. Need more packages? Chainguard customers can use Custom Assembly to add packages, either through the Console, chainctl, or API.

To use Custom Assembly in the Chainguard Console: navigate to the image you'd like to customize in your Organization's list of images, and click on the Customize image button at the top of the page.
