Chainguard Container for commercial-nginx-plus-fips

F5 NGINX Plus is an all-in-one load balancer, reverse proxy, web server, and content cache with enterprise features, with FIPS support.

Chainguard Containers are regularly-updated, secure-by-default container images.

Download this Container Image

For those with access, this container image is available on cgr.dev:

docker pull cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/commercial-nginx-plus-fips:latest

Be sure to replace the ORGANIZATION placeholder with the name used for your organization's private repository within the Chainguard Registry.

Compatibility Notes

commercial-nginx-plus-fips is the FIPS variant of commercial-nginx-plus. It ships the same F5 NGINX Plus binaries, the same entrypoint (/usr/sbin/nginx), default arguments (-g "daemon off;") and SIGQUIT stop signal, and the same full set of NGINX Plus modules:

  • commercial-nginx-plus (core)
  • commercial-nginx-plus-module-acme
  • commercial-nginx-plus-module-lua
  • commercial-nginx-plus-module-ndk
  • commercial-nginx-plus-module-njs
  • commercial-nginx-plus-module-otel
  • commercial-nginx-plus-module-prometheus

NGINX Plus takes all of its cryptography from the system OpenSSL and bundles none of its own. This image adds openssl-config-fipshardened, which activates the Chainguard FIPS-validated OpenSSL provider, so TLS, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 traffic served by NGINX Plus uses FIPS-approved algorithms only. Connections that negotiate a non-approved cipher suite or protocol version are rejected.

FIPS Support

This image installs openssl-config-fipshardened, which activates the Chainguard FIPS-validated OpenSSL provider (CMVP #5132). NGINX Plus takes all of its cryptography from the system OpenSSL, so TLS, HTTP/2 and HTTP/3 traffic is restricted to FIPS-approved algorithms and connections negotiating a non-approved cipher suite or protocol version are refused.

You can confirm the provider is active and passing its self-tests:

docker run --rm --entrypoint openssl-fips-test cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/commercial-nginx-plus-fips:latest

Note that NGINX Plus implements MD5 and SHA-1 internally rather than calling OpenSSL for them, so features that rely on those digests -- proxy cache keys and the WebSocket handshake -- continue to work under FIPS but do not use the validated module for that step.

Prerequisites

  • A valid NGINX Plus license and subscription from F5. Visit the NGINX Plus product page for more information.
  • Access to the Chainguard Registry for your organization.

Getting Started

Verify that the image is working by checking the version:

docker run --rm --entrypoint /usr/sbin/nginx cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/commercial-nginx-plus-fips:latest -v

Confirm that the FIPS provider is active and passes its self-tests:

docker run --rm --entrypoint openssl-fips-test cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/commercial-nginx-plus-fips:latest

Run NGINX Plus with your license and configuration mounted:

docker run -d -p 8443:443 \
  -v /path/to/license.jwt:/etc/nginx/license.jwt:ro \
  -v /path/to/nginx.conf:/etc/nginx/nginx.conf:ro \
  cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/commercial-nginx-plus-fips:latest

Documentation and Resources

What are Chainguard Containers?

Chainguard's free tier of Starter container images are built with Wolfi, our minimal Linux undistro.

All other Chainguard Containers are built with Chainguard OS, Chainguard's minimal Linux operating system designed to produce container images that meet the requirements of a more secure software supply chain.

The main features of Chainguard Containers include:

For cases where you need container images with shells and package managers to build or debug, most Chainguard Containers come paired with a development, or -dev, variant.

In all other cases, including Chainguard Containers tagged as :latest or with a specific version number, the container images include only an open-source application and its runtime dependencies. These minimal container images typically do not contain a shell or package manager.

Although the -dev container image variants have similar security features as their more minimal versions, they include additional software that is typically not necessary in production environments. We recommend using multi-stage builds to copy artifacts from the -dev variant into a more minimal production image.

Need additional packages?

To improve security, Chainguard Containers include only essential dependencies. Need more packages? Chainguard customers can use Custom Assembly to add packages, either through the Console, chainctl, or API.

To use Custom Assembly in the Chainguard Console: navigate to the image you'd like to customize in your Organization's list of images, and click on the Customize image button at the top of the page.
