Chainguard Container for cimg-base

The CircleCI Base (Ubuntu) Docker Convenience Image.

Chainguard Containers are regularly-updated, secure-by-default container images.

Download this Container Image

For those with access, this container image is available on cgr.dev:

docker pull cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/cimg-base:latest

Be sure to replace the ORGANIZATION placeholder with the name used for your organization's private repository within the Chainguard Registry.

Compatibility Notes

Chainguard's cimg-base container image is comparable to the cimg/base CircleCI convenience image, with the following differences:

  • It is built on Wolfi instead of Ubuntu, so there is no apt-get. Toolchains come from Wolfi packages.
  • It includes the Docker CLI, Buildx, and Docker Compose for use with a remote Docker engine (for example, CircleCI's setup_remote_docker). It does not include the Docker daemon.
  • The image runs as the circleci user (UID 1001, GID 1002) with /home/circleci/project as the working directory, the same as upstream. sudo is not included, so packages can't be installed as root at job runtime. The image also does not set the global git config safe.directory '*' that upstream sets.
  • DEBIAN_FRONTEND and the upstream tool version variables (DOCKER_VERSION, COMPOSE_VER, COMPOSE_SWITCH_VERSION) are not set. They only apply to the upstream Ubuntu build.
  • Like all other Chainguard Containers, cimg-base has a minimal design and few-to-zero CVEs.

Getting Started

Use the image as a CircleCI Docker executor:

version: 2.1
jobs:
  build:
    docker:
      - image: cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/cimg-base:latest
    steps:
      - checkout
      - run: make

Or run it locally:

docker run --rm -it cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/cimg-base:latest

The default command is /bin/bash. The image includes Git, Git LFS, the OpenSSH client, curl, jq, yq, dockerize, the GCC build toolchain (build-base), and the Docker CLI with the Buildx and Compose plugins.

Configuration

The image sets these environment variables, matching upstream:

  • PATH starts with /home/circleci/bin and /home/circleci/.local/bin, so tools installed into those directories are found first.
  • TERM=dumb and PAGER=cat, for non-interactive CI output.
  • LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LANGUAGE=en_US:en, and LC_ALL=en_US.UTF-8.

If you mount a project directory into /home/circleci/project, the circleci user (UID 1001) must be able to write to it.

Documentation and Resources

The upstream project is licensed under the MIT License.

What are Chainguard Containers?

Chainguard's free tier of Starter container images are built with Wolfi, our minimal Linux undistro.

All other Chainguard Containers are built with Chainguard OS, Chainguard's minimal Linux operating system designed to produce container images that meet the requirements of a more secure software supply chain.

The main features of Chainguard Containers include:

For cases where you need container images with shells and package managers to build or debug, most Chainguard Containers come paired with a development, or -dev, variant.

In all other cases, including Chainguard Containers tagged as :latest or with a specific version number, the container images include only an open-source application and its runtime dependencies. These minimal container images typically do not contain a shell or package manager.

Although the -dev container image variants have similar security features as their more minimal versions, they include additional software that is typically not necessary in production environments. We recommend using multi-stage builds to copy artifacts from the -dev variant into a more minimal production image.

Need additional packages?

To improve security, Chainguard Containers include only essential dependencies. Need more packages? Chainguard customers can use Custom Assembly to add packages, either through the Console, chainctl, or API.

To use Custom Assembly in the Chainguard Console: navigate to the image you'd like to customize in your Organization's list of images, and click on the Customize image button at the top of the page.
