Impact

cortex 1.20.1 depends on a number of non-release versions of important modules, resulting in a host of dependency resolution errors when attempting remediation. Upstream appear to have improved this situation in their trunk branch, but there are too many unrelated changes for a backport: cortex upstream will need to issue the 1.21 release and include the fixed grpc version.
