Chainguard Container for redis-bitnami

Minimalist Wolfi-based Redis-Bitnami image.

Chainguard Containers are regularly-updated, secure-by-default container images.

Download this Container Image

For those with access, this container image is available on cgr.dev:

docker pull cgr.dev/ORGANIZATION/redis-bitnami:latest

Be sure to replace the ORGANIZATION placeholder with the name used for your organization's private repository within the Chainguard Registry.

Compatibility Notes

Redis is an in-memory key-value database. Chainguard's redis-bitnami container images are comparable to the bitnami/redis image available on Docker Hub. However, the Chainguard images contain only the minimum set of tools and dependencies needed to function. This means it does not include things like a shell or a package manager.

Redis Bitnami Images:

The redis-bitnami images are intended to be drop-in replacements for deployments that require Bitnami compatibility. The redis-bitnami image actually contains three images:

redis-server-bitnami

The redis-server-bitnami image contains the Redis server software with Bitnami compatibility. Redis is an in-memory key-value database often used as a cache, vector database, document database, streaming engine, and message broker. It comes with its own commands and APIs which allow you to interact with and manage your Redis data.

redis-cluster-bitnami

redis-cluster-bitnami contains a Bitnami-compatible version of Redis Cluster, a distributed implementation of Redis. This allows you to run multiple Redis nodes that write to the same database with high performance, high availability, and an acceptable degree of write safety. Redis Cluster can support up to 1000 nodes.

redis-sentinel-bitnami

redis-sentinel-bitnami contains a Bitnami-compatible version of Redis Sentinel, a version of Redis that provides high availability and other collateral tasks such as monitoring, notifications, and acts as a configuration provider for clients.

Deploying with Helm

The most common deployment case is to use the Bitnami Helm chart, which can be deployed as follows:

cat <<EOF > values.yaml
image:
  registry: cgr.dev
  repository: ORGANIZATION/redis-server-bitnami
  tag: latest
# Optionally enable HA sentinel:
sentinel:
  enabled: true
  image:
    registry: cgr.dev
    repository: ORGANIZATION/redis-sentinel-bitnami
    tag: latest
# Optionally enable Redis cluster:
cluster:
  enabled: true
  image:
    registry: cgr.dev
    repository: ORGANIZATION/redis-cluster-bitnami
    tag: latest
EOF

What are Chainguard Containers?

Chainguard Containers are minimal container images that are secure by default.

In many cases, the Chainguard Containers tagged as :latest contain only an open-source application and its runtime dependencies. These minimal container images typically do not contain a shell or package manager. Chainguard Containers are built with Wolfi, our Linux undistro designed to produce container images that meet the requirements of a more secure software supply chain.

The main features of Chainguard Containers include:

For cases where you need container images with shells and package managers to build or debug, most Chainguard Containers come paired with a -dev variant.

Although the -dev container image variants have similar security features as their more minimal versions, they feature additional software that is typically not necessary in production environments. We recommend using multi-stage builds to leverage the -dev variants, copying application artifacts into a final minimal container that offers a reduced attack surface that won’t allow package installations or logins.
